Hispánica: Guernica
On the 1st
of May of 1937, Francisco Franco
allowed the Luftwaffe of Hitler
to bomb the Basque village of
Guernica. The result was a town
totally destroyed and 1600
innocent deaths. Picasso
painted the above canvass to
express his outrage at the
bombing of Guernica. The
following are Picasso’s own
words: “Yo siempre creía y
creeré que los artistas que
viven y trabajan según
espirituales valores no pueden y
no deberían permanecer
indiferentes al conflicto en el
que los altos valores de la
humanidad y de la civilización
están en juego.”
