TYPICAL INGREDIENTS FOR A
SUCCESSFUL ADVANCE PLACEMENT
SPANISH CLASS
-
A daily list of verb
infinitives that are
derived from any current
lessons.
-
A daily grammar review
drill session that
manipulates the verb forms
or concepts being presented.
-
A photo scene based
on one targeted
vocabulary group, such
as the home, the downtown,
speaking on the phone, etc.
-
Dictation exercises,
questions and answer
exercises, free response
exercises, group exercises,
laboratory
listening/speaking
exercises, all of these
based on the photo scene
above.
-
A sequential photo
lesson of six frames that
will be used to develop a
non-stop
story-telling skill
similar to the AP test
section of the same.
-
A target list of
vocabulary based on a
theme, grammar topic, or
survival skill. Examples
might include: idiomatic
expressions, verbs that
require prepositions,
weather, travel, food, etc.
-
A daily reading
assignment preferably based
on current events, culture
and civilization, or
Spanish/Hispanic
literature. It was my
custom to always be reading
one of the classics of
Spanish literature and the
end product was a critical
analysis essay/paper of the
text. Ex: EN LA ARDIENTE
OSCURIDAD by Antonio Buero-Vallejo.
-
A daily dose of culture
and civilization based
on slides, PowerPoint, or a
video drama such as
Destinos or La
Catrina, or all of
these.
-
Some daily practice of the
listening and speaking
portions of the AP test.
These can be purchased
already professionally
produced, or the teacher can
make his/her own version. I
usually do both.
All the above ingredients can be
delivered in a variety of ways
and using a variety of
techniques or methodologies. It
is important to never lose sight
of the goal and to also provide
as much daily practice as
possible in all language skills:
listening, speaking, reading,
writing, and
culture/civilization.
